Feedback on the 2012 edition of the Onderberg Spesie Bonanza.

In March 2012 Team Angling & Outdoor consisting of Peter Zonneveld, Simon Bezuidenhout, and myself set off to Barra to fish in the annual Onderberg Spesie Bonanza. The fourth member of our team, Hennie Papenfuss was flying in from Vilanculos. Being one of the sponsors of the event the aim was not to win the competition but to promote our huge range of fishing tackle and obviously to have a great time on and off of the water. Hennie was also responsible for making a DVD of the event.

I landed a quality Tuna pulling the scales to 29lbs.

We left Nelspruit early on the Saturday morning and reached our destination late the Saturday night. After unpacking the luggage and fishing tackle we felt it necessary to go and see what the night life in Tofu had to offer three tired team members. “R & R” seemed to be the refreshment of the evening and so we had to have a few of them before returning to Barra early on the Sunday morning. On the Sunday we took it easy recovering from all the refreshments from the night before and rigging up tackle for the next days fishing. Hennie joined us at lunch time and helped us to ensure that all the knots and leaders were tip top for the competition.

Hennie poses with the stunning Dorado he boated using a Berkley Air drop-shot outfit.

On the Monday we spent a lot of time figuring out which reefs were productive and what the fish were interested in as far as lures, bait and jigging tackle went. We were able to weigh a few Tunas, but unfortunately most fish caught were not game fish that were part of the competition. The rest of the week we caught Dorados, Cuta, sharks, big Tunas and allot of other reef species.

The most productive lures were Rapala X-Raps, Halco Sorcerers, Buck Tail Jigs, King Squidys and Bess Lures Feathers. Hennie landed a very fine Dorado and a Shark on his Berkley Air drop-shot outfit. Peter had a lot of fun on a Shimano Vengeance 9” rod with a Shimano Stella 4000 reel. Simon, Peter and I landed Drommetjies (Tuna over 10kgs) on Shimano Talica 20 reels on CD Viper rods.

Simon Bezuidenhout’s fine Yellowfin Tuna of 33lbs.

Our fabulous boat, an Ace Glider 530, was washed and treated with Starbrite products. The best boat and motor cleaning products available. We stock a full range of Starbrite products in store.

We had a great time at the competition and look forward to fishing it again next year!
